64th Annual Conference

Society for the History of Discoveries

Worlds of Exploration

The James Ford Bell Library, located in the  Elmer L. Anderson         Library Building on the University of Minnesota campus, offers an ideal venue to host the 2023 SHD conference.  The library's  extensive collection of rare books, maps, manuscripts, and archival materials make it an important center for researching the history and impact of trade and cultural exchange before the 19th century.   This year’s conference locale aligns with the global breadth of the Society’s mission by supporting research into expeditions, biographies, cartography, cultural interaction, technologies of travel, and myriad other aspects of geographic discovery.

With its expansive resources, the Bell Library and other University of Minnesota library collections offer the members of the Society and the presenters an ideal opportunity to conduct research prior to and after the conference. The rich and fascinating collections embolden the inspiration for our conference.
