65th ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The Society for the History of Discoveries

Where:  San Antonio, Texas

When:   October 24-26

Venue:  Menger Hotel on Historic Alamo Plaza

Frontiers and Borderlands of Exploration

Frontiers, where explorers, traders, and indigenous peoples encounter one another, are the theme of this year’s conference.  Those encountering frontiers expand their geographic and socio-cultural understandings as well as their political and economic relationships.  The experience and the acquisition of knowledge by those crossing into unfamiliar territory, as well as the transmission of this knowledge back to their homelands, includes scholarly examinations of exploration, encounters, and resistance across colonial and exploratory frontiers globally.

SHD will be partnering with The Texas Map Society (TMS) for the Annual Conference.  With its warm weather, beautiful riverwalk, and rich history, San Antonio offers another exciting venue that aligns with our society's broad interests.

The conference will be a multiple-day affair held near the Alamo.  The Texas Map Society will meet all day on Thursday and will have a reception that evening.  SHD meetings will be held on Friday and Saturday, and the reception and banquet will be Friday evening.

The optional Sunday Excursion has been cancelled.  If you registered and paid for the Excursion earlier, you will be refunded your payment.

The Menger Hotel:  An Historic Venue for Our Meeting

Located directly on Alamo Square, our venue this year for the Annual Conference is the famed Menger Hotel, historic partner hotel of the Alamo. As the oldest continuously operating hotel west of the Mississippi, this fantastic venue is a testament to the deep cultural history of San Antonio and is a gateway to the local culture.

Theodore Roosevelt once gathered his Rough Riders in the Menger Bar, and of course the venue is just steps away from the World Heritage Site that is the Alamo. The entire area is steeped in history!

Located on San Antonio's River Walk, there are numerous amenities both in the hotel and immediately outside. Visitors can lounge in the Victorian Lobby, walk through the Spanish courtyard garden, or take advantage of the easy walking distance to numerous local landmarks.

. . . Reserve Your Spot at a Special Rate

The 65th Annual Society for the History of Discoveries Meeting will take place from October 24th through October 26th with an optional excursion on October 27th.  Members planning on attending the conference, which will be held this year at the Menger Hotel, have the opportunity to book a special rate at the hotel for the dates of the conference.

NOTE - The special SHD rate for rooms expired on October 7th.

This fantastic venue is the historic partner of the Alamo and is located directly on San Antonio's River Walk. Guests have centralized access to many of San Antonio's most exciting and historic amenities, and of course, they will be at the center of the annual meeting! The hotel itself features two different restaurants, a historic bar, a pool, and delightful gardens on-site.
