Join us for a special outing to historic St. Augustine Florida. Cost $40.00 including lunch. Bus leaves the Holiday Inn University Center at 8:00 a.m.; will arrive back by 4:00 p.m.
Free Walking Tour
Dr. James Cusick, Curator of the P. K. Yonge Library of Florida History at the University of Florida, will lead a tour along several streets to the south of St. Augustine’s Plaza de la Constitución,” in a section of the city first laid out and occupied in 1572, and burned by Sir Francis Drake in 1586. Along the way we will see historic Trinity Episcopal Church, built on the site of the British colonial statehouse from the 1770s; pass the mother house of the Sisters of St. Joseph, where archaeologists uncovered the remains of the Spanish colonial church of Nuestra Señora de la Soledad; walk up historic Avilés Street with its standing colonial-era buildings and residences from the 18th and 19th centuries; and explore the central plaza, site of numerous archaeological digs, and tied closely to St. Augustine’s civil rights protests in the 1960s.

You are responsible for making your own arrangements for the trolley tour and for choosing which other venues to visit and paying the appropriate entrance fees. Box lunches will be available at Government House beginning at 12:00 noon; the bus to return to Gainesville will leave promptly at 2 p.m. from Government House.
